THE MOST BASIC OF ALL HUMAN NEEDS IS THE NEED TO UNDERSTAND AND BE UNDERSTOOD. THE BEST WAY TO UNDERSTAND PEOPLE IS TO LISTEN TO THEM.
RALPH G. NICHOLS
CONNECTION
TO CONNECT WITH MY YOUNG SUBJECTS, I interact with them on a human level. I don’t talk down to them. I meet each child, from babies to teenagers, at his or her level of understanding and maturity. I encourage. I direct. But I also allow quiet moments so as not to overwhelm the subject.
If I am looking for fun or candid moments, I play music the child likes, I use a trusted child wrangler to help the child with encouragement and interaction.
I stay focused on the emotional and visual aesthetics of the shoot, keeping the pace quick and the tone light-hearted. I encourage the subject to feel pride and confidence. I want my subjects to leave the experience uplifted.
For adults, I gently coach them on how to show their most flattering angles and expressions. My background in fashion photography and 10+ years of teaching posing aka photo movement nationwide how to move gives me an edge in working with real people.
At the beginning of the shoot, I open a connection and help my subjects think about the outcome of the shoot, what we are trying to achieve. In this campaign, where they’ll be helping others like themselves, the motivation can be especially powerful when tapped.
